What Three Months on the Road Taught Me About Brands

When we left Beechworth for three months on the road, I thought the biggest challenge would be keeping WWWART running while travelling. After more than 28 years in business, stepping away from the office for that length of time felt like a significant test.
But somewhere between Queensland, the Northern Territory and the Kimberley, I realised I was learning something far more valuable.
Every accommodation booking, tourism website, visitor guide, roadside sign and customer interaction was giving me a front-row seat to the customer experience.
As business owners, we spend most of our time looking at our own brands from the inside.
For three months, I was seeing hundreds of businesses entirely from the outside.
Some made it incredibly easy to find information, build trust and make a booking. Others made even the simplest decisions harder than they needed to be.
It was a timely reminder that good branding isn't just about how a business looks. It's about how easily customers can understand, find and engage with it.
And it reinforced why our Annual Brand Review now focuses on five key pillars: Brand Consistency, Website Performance, Search Visibility, Customer Experience and Business Reputation.
The journey was feeding the work
What I hadn't really anticipated was how much the trip would influence the way I looked at brands and customer experience.
Over three months we booked accommodation, tours, campgrounds and attractions across Australia. We navigated countless websites, compared options, searched for information and tried to work out what we actually needed to do next.
And then there were the brochures. So many brochures. They accumulated in the car and caravan as we travelled and often influenced where we'd stop, what we'd see and which experiences we'd choose.
Without really meaning to, I spent three months experiencing websites, marketing, signage, printed material and customer communication exactly as a customer would.
Some experiences were seamless. Others made simple tasks surprisingly difficult.
What struck me was how often our decisions came down to the same fundamentals we now review through the five pillars of our Annual Brand Review:
- Brand Consistency
- Website Performance
- Search Visibility
- Customer Experience
- Business Reputation
Sometimes the businesses with the biggest marketing budgets weren't the ones winning our attention. Often, it was the businesses with the clearest information, the easiest booking process and the strongest overall customer experience.
The trip reminded me that marketing is rarely about a single website, logo or social media post. It's about how all the pieces work together to help customers make decisions with confidence.
I came home with thousands of photographs, three travel books and a renewed appreciation for the practical realities of how people interact with businesses every day. Sometimes the best professional development happens when you step away from your desk and become the customer.
The biggest lesson wasn't about technology
Somewhere along the road I realised the biggest reason I could make the trip work wasn't Starlink, the laptop or the systems we'd put in place.
It was trust.
Trust in the systems we'd built over many years and, more importantly, the relationships we have with our clients.
Nobody expected an instant response simply because technology made it possible. Clients respected what we were doing, followed along with parts of the journey and gave us the space to experience it.
For that, I'm incredibly grateful.
The experience reinforced something I've always believed: strong businesses are built on relationships, consistency and trust.
Ironically, they're also the same foundations we explore with clients through our Annual Brand Review process.
And yes, after three months on the road, WWWART survived just fine. In fact, I think we came back with fresh eyes.
Three months on the road gave me the opportunity to step away from the day-to-day running of WWWART and experience hundreds of businesses from the customer's perspective.
Some left a lasting impression for all the right reasons. Others highlighted just how frustrating small gaps in communication, navigation or customer experience can be.
It reinforced why good branding is never just about a logo, a website or a social media presence. It's about how all those pieces work together to create trust.
That's the thinking behind the refreshed Annual Brand Review and the five pillars that now sit at its centre.
More importantly, it reinforced that strong brands aren't built through a single marketing activity. They're built through consistent experiences that make it easy for customers to choose you with confidence.
After three months on the road, that's a lesson worth bringing home.
What have you put in place to support consistency when things change?
